History of Ms. Wheelchair America
In 1972 Dr. Philip K. Wood of Columbus, Ohio, had devoted his
career treating and rehabilitating persons with functional
impairments. During his practice, he became
aware of the talent, capabilities, determination and courage of
persons with disabilities. He established
Ms. Wheelchair America as a forum for promoting the achievements
as well as the needs of persons with mobility challenges.
This non-profit program is staffed and coordinated by
volunteers throughout the country who are dedicated to increase
public awareness so that all citizens will be able to lead
productive and meaningful lives.
The Ms. Wheelchair America Program is in no way a
beauty contest. It is a competition
to select the most accomplished and articulate spokesperson for
people with disabilities. It does not come
with a scholarship. The representative must
be able to communicate the needs and accomplishments of her
constituency to the general public, the business community
and the legislature.
The Mission of
Ms. Wheelchair Michigan
Ms. Wheelchair Michigan, Inc. was created as a non-profit
organization to recognize the spirit of all people, focusing on
an appreciation for life and the spirit of those who use
wheelchairs.
The abilities, endeavors and
achievements of women who use wheelchairs are recognized and
honored in an annual pageant.
Ms. Wheelchair Michigan is a spokesperson throughout Michigan
where she can combine awareness, acceptance and understanding of
disability to the public, creating a value-added community to
raise spirit and energy. She travels across the state, visit
advocacy groups, make public appearances and conduct interviews.
